If you haven’t heard yet, Notorious is a biopic that shows the life and death story of Notorious B.I.G. (a.k.a. Christopher Wallace), who came straight out of Brooklyn to take the world of rap music by storm (IMDb). 8 Mile told a fictionalized story loosely based on Eminem’s life and Get Rich or Die Tryin’ told a story somewhat based on the experiences of 50 Cent. However, Notorious is the first major film that chronicles the real-life story of a hip-hop legend.

Here are the top 5 reasons why you should go check out Notorious when it drops on January 16, 2009.

5. The actors look just like their real-life counterparts. Jamal Woolard looks so much like Biggie that I could barely tell pictures of the two apart. Now, I know that looking similar isn’t the most important aspect of playing a real person, but after a nationwide search of actors, rappers and non-professionals the filmmakers unanimously agreed that Woolard IS the Notorious B.I.G.

4. The costumes look fantastic. Check out the Notorious trailer below. The pin stripe suit alone is pretty fantastic!

3. Christopher Wallace kind of lived the American dream. Of course, he died too young, for incredibly stupid reasons. While he was alive, he really did live the rags to riches story that is what America is all about. His story is the type that makes a great, tragic film.

2. This film is guaranteed to have a great soundtrack! The 90’s were a pinnacle in the hip hop/rap genre.  This soundtrack should include choice cuts from Biggie, Tupac, Dr. Dre, Snoop and plenty of other memorable songs.

1. I love films that are true time capsules. I love this summer’s The Wackness in part because it represented New York (the city I love), in the summer of 1994 with such nuance. Notorious will capture a moment in time, bringing on a rush of nostalgia. At its best Notorious will shed light on the time and place it was set in.

Maybe you aren’t a fan of Biggie or Tupac? Well, this movie might change your feelings. At the very least it should shed explore the east coast/west coast battle that caused so much death and turmoil in the 90’s hip-hop community.

For all who haven’t yet seen the trailer, and for those who can’t get enough:

And might I add: I am so happy that Barack Obama is our next president!

Hip Hop’s biggest event took place this weekend with the BET Hip Hop Awards in the“A”—the new Hip Hop mecca. Katt Williams was all set to host this event for a 3-peat, but plans changed when Katt challenged T-Pain to a break dancing competition. With some serious consideration T-Pain accepted the challenge and was crowned victorious, as the new host for the 2008 Hip Hop Awards. But, enough of the small talk. Check out the red carpet:

Ciara hit the carpet with designer Michael Knight (of Project Runway fame), and looked all the way fab.

Monica, her Louis Vuitton bag and her fiancee Rocko hit the carpet matching in all black.

A-Town native, Keri Hilson, hit the carpet looking FAB-U-LOUS. Love the hair, accessories, make-up, dress, everything!

She also stopped to take a flic with the “Go Girl” CiCi. I must say, these two ladies are my favorite looks from the whole night.

The very sexy talented Nelly came out looking very event appropriate. God this man is so… talented.

Kerry Washington gave Hollywood a couple days off to take the A by storm. She looked gorgeous- per usual

Founder & Executive Director of WEEN Valeisha Butterfield came out looking stunning. Love the magnolia lips! President/CEO of Hip-Hop Summit Action Network Dr. Benjamin Chavis came out with the lovely lady.

The host of the event, T-Pain, hit the carpet looking very T-Painish if that makes sense.

Pharrell showed up and showed out on the carpet.

Mr. Curtis Jackson came out (for the first time since the BET Hip-Hop Awards started). Good to see all is well with him, he also has several projects coming out soon. He’s not the richest man in hip-hop for no reason.

Soulja Boy came out looking… interesting, to say the least. Are those tigers on your jeans?

Bow Weezy hit the carpet looking casual and very very nice I must say. This works.

Hip-Hop superstar turned box-office phenomenon, came out out to show love to the culture that gave him so much. Something as simple as this is how you give back. Just show up and show love.

Who said only rappers love hip-hop? R&B/Soul sensation Musiq Soulchild also made an appearance.

Common came out, I love this new look of his. It’s very fitting. Clear lens glasses? Who would have ever thought.

The fabulous Tocarra came out, gotta love this girl.

Salt N Peppa came out, good to see all is well… hopefully. Gotta love these ladies.

The ladies of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” came out. Might I add I’m addicted to that show?

50 Cent, Big Boi, T.I. and recipient of the “I Am Hip-Hop” Icon Award, Russell Simmons, all got together for a group shot.

Kevin Liles & Shawty Lo looked quite dapper but still very “hip-Hop”. Whatever that means.

Hip-Hop legends YoYo and Ice Cube posed for a flic all in the name of that good ‘ole hip-hop.

The star of the upcoming “Notorious” movie (a biopic of Biggie Smalls life and death) Jamel “Gravy” Woolard of course made an appearance.

Appearances for the show included Nelly, LL Cool J, Rick Ross, Pharrell, Plies, Salt N Pepa, Common, Ciara, Keri Hilson, 50 Cent, Common, Soulja Boy and Bow Wow, The Real Housewives of Atlanta– to name a few. Actors Jamal “Gravy” Woolard, who plays Notorious B.I.G. in an upcoming biopic, and Derek Luke (“Antoine Fisher”) presented as well. [This is a must see movie, it comes out January 2009. I can’t wait!] TI was also in the buildingafter being a no show last year after being charged with federal gun charges. The self-proclaimed “King of the South” also did a surprise performance with Ludacris, which confirms the notion that the beef is finally squashed. (Thankfully, because these two are way too talented to fight over foolishness!) Russell Simmons also made an appearance as the recipient of the “I Am Hip Hop” Icon Award. (kudos to Russey!) The big question for the night was where were B and Jay?

Lil Wayne walked away with three awards and also had some big news about his son on the way. He told the crowd, “I got a son about to be born any day now, so shout-out to him. Pray for me.” Surprisingly Shawty Lo included some of the big winners for the night. In effort not to ruin the show for those who have yet to see it, you can watch to see everyone who wins this Thursday, October 23rdon BET at 8pm. BUT for those who don’t mind a spoiler, check out the flic’s from the show under the cut…… Read the rest of this entry »
